The Greater Clam Squid (Occuloconchi)
Among the myriad alien life forms discovered in the warm equatorial seas of Kepler-138c, few are as ecologically significant—or biologically baffling—as the greater clam squid.
Anatomy and Morphology:
The greater clam squid is encased in a dual-plated, turtle-like shell, composed of a dense calciferous material. The shell sandwiches a gelatinous, highly vascularized central body that resembles a cephalopod in texture and movement.
Emerging from the central mass are six tentacles, each capable of precise movement and equipped with chemoreceptive cilia. Five glowing eyes, spaced radially around the anterior ventral ridge, grant the clam squid nearly 360-degree vision in the light-dappled currents of its native reefs.
Reproduction and Development:
The species is hermaphroditic, with each individual possessing both ovipositors and fertilization glands, allowing for a highly adaptable reproductive strategy. Gestation occurs internally until the development of the "egg sack"—a unique biological structure comprised of nutrient-rich tissue embedded with fertilized eggs. This globular mass originates near the lower internal cavity of the squid and eventually breaks through a specialized seam along the posterior underside of the lower shell. This seam, nearly invisible in juveniles and dormant adults, splits open when hormonal changes indicate embryonic maturity.
The released "egg sack" remains attached to the squid's body until the eggs reach maturity, at which point it is discarded. Its semi-permeable membrane sustains the hatchlings with both oxygen and food as they mature, serving as a protective nursery and initial sustenance until the juveniles can swim independently.
